Gather your blankets and lawn chairs and head down to the Santa Monica Pier to experience the music and drama of Don Giovanni under the stars. This event is free to attend with RSVP and open to all ages. Get your tickets here.

Don Giovanni is an opera in two acts with music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to an Italian libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. Its subject is a centuries-old Spanish legend about a libertine as told by playwright Tirso de Molina in his 1630 play El burlador de Sevilla y convidado de piedra.

Opera at the Beach is fast becoming one of the west side’s most cherished traditions. Listening to and experiencing opera outside in such an iconic location is a must-attend event for anyone interested in the art of performance. LA Opera spares no expense in arranging for state-of-the-art broadcast live from the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles to the Santa Monica Pier. The simulcast is displayed on a 40-foot screen outside on the pier. Guests are encouraged to bring low beach chairs to sit and enjoy the performance.

Tips for Attending Opera at the Beach

  • Guests can start setting up their chairs as early as 4:30 PM. Arrive early to enjoy free arts & crafts activities provided by LA Opera staff.
  • Ample parking is available throughout Downtown Santa Monica and the beaches. The closest parking is in Lot 1 North located at 1550 Appian Way. Check out these parking options by the Pier.
  • The pier offers several food & beverage options. Alcohol consumption is not permitted inside the LA Opera viewing area.
  • Although daytime temperatures at Santa Monica State Beach will be warm during the day, temps can drop by as much as 20 degrees after the sun sets. Pack a hoodie or blanket for your trip to stay warm during the performance.
  • This year, there will be NO chair rental available. Low beach chairs, cushions, and blankets are great for sitting on the pier deck; no canopies, tents, or sun umbrellas are allowed.
  • No large coolers, wagons, carts or other items that may block walkways. There will be a bag check at the event entrance.

In the heat of the moment, the notorious Don Giovanni (aka Don Juan) murders the father of one of his conquests, unwittingly unleashing an ominous force from beyond the grave that can’t be stopped. Accustomed to getting away with anything and everything, he must now face the music as years of cruelty and debauchery come due.
