Ferris Wheel Lighting for Black History Month
The Pacific Park Ferris wheel joins other landmarks around the U.S. glowing with the colors of the Pan African flag. Previously, the Empire State Building, the Blue Cross Blue Shield building in Chicago, the Prudential Center in Boston, and dozens of historic monuments have shone brightly to mark the occasion.
February is Black History Month
Black History Month is an annual commemoration originating here in the U.S. It is a time for celebrating the achievements of African Americans and recognizing their critical role in U.S. history. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries throughout the world, including the U.K and Canada, also designate a month to celebrating Black history. Accordingly, this month we pay tribute to the generations of African Americans who struggled against adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society.

dusk (around 5 PM) to midnight

Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier
Pacific Park regularly programs the Ferris wheel to display seasonal programing and themed light designs for holidays and special occasions. We installed the Pacific Wheel’s state-of-the-art lighting package in 2016.It can display over 1.6 million different colors and animate patterns and icons in 24 frames per second.
Solar arrays inside Pacific Park power the energy-efficient LEDs on the face of the Ferris wheel. Pacific Park staff curate and designe the light programs. Because each design is manually animated, some designs can take hours of programming. The aim is to provide fun, high-energy, and sometimes whimsical designs to entertain guests on the Santa Monica Pier and surrounding beaches
