Fox Television’s The Masked Singer received an Emmy nomination for Best Reality Competition Program. To encourage consideration, Fox arranged for a giant Miss Monster, wearing a 10-foot-wide mask, to be installed at the Santa Monica Pier. The character has been installed over Inkie the Octopus who sprawls over the main entrance to the amusement park. The installation will be on display to be enjoyed from a distance now through August 30th.
The Emmy Awards recognizes excellence in the television industry. They are presented annually honoring various sectors of the television industry. Netflix’s “Nailed It!” as well as reigning champion “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and former winners “Top Chef” and “The Voice” were also nominated in the category. This year’s Emmy Awards will be held Sunday, September 20th on ABC.
The Masked Singer is the #1 show on television, drawing a massive audience of nearly 24 million viewers in its post-Super Bowl Season Three premiere. The singing competition series is hosted by Nick Cannon and features panelists Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger, Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke.
The show features celebrities facing off against one another with one major twist: each singer is shrouded from head-to-toe in an elaborate costume, complete with full face mask to conceal his or her identity. Season Three boasts 18 celebrity singers in all-new costumes and masks, as well as guest judges Jamie Foxx, Jason Biggs, Leah Remini, T-Pain, and others.
With each performance, the host, panelists, audience, viewers and even the other contestants are left guessing who is singing behind the mask. Ranging from Grammy Award winners to legendary athletes, and everything in between, the singers may attempt to throw the crowd off their scent, while keen observers might pick up on tiny clues buried throughout the show. One singer will be eliminated each week, ultimately revealing his or her true identity.
The character depicted above the Park’s entrance is Miss Monster sporting, one giant sparkling green eye, a huge bow, and pink lips underneath her 10-foot-wide face mask promoting compliance with current safety guidelines. Miss Monster was revealed to be R&B sensation Chaka Khan on season 3 of the Masked Singer. Kahn, who is sometimes referred to as the “Queen of Funk”, is an accomplished and award-winning musician and songwriter for over 50 years. She began her career in the 1970s as the lead vocalist of the funk band Rufus and is the first R&B artist to have a crossover hit featuring a rapper, with “I Feel for You” in 1984. Khan has won ten Grammy Awards and has sold an estimated 70 million records worldwide.
